I, ALAN KELLY, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 3 of the European Communities Act 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of European Parliament and Council Directive 2006/66/EC of 6 September 2006 on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators as amended by European Parliament and Council Directive 2008/103/EC of 19 November 2008 and for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of Commission Decision 2009/603/EC of 5 August 2009 establishing requirements for registration of producers of batteries and accumulators, hereby make the following regulations: |

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Union (Batteries and Accumulators) (Amendment) Regulations 2014. |
||
2. Regulation 3 of the European Union (Batteries and Accumulators) Regulations 2014 ( S.I. No. 283 of 2014 ) is amended by inserting the following after regulation 3(2): |
||
"3(3) These Regulations come into effect on 30 July 2014.". |

These Regulations are designed to promote the recycling of waste batteries. They will facilitate in particular the achievement of the targets for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries in an environmentally sound manner established by European Parliament and Council Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and waste batteries and repealing Directive 91/157/EEC. |
