UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - LONG TITLE An Act to make provision for the payment of an additional grant to the Queen's University of Belfast and grants to the Magee University College, Londonderry, and the Armagh Observatory, and for the appointment of additional members on the governing bodies of the said College and Observatory; to provide that the governing body of the said Observatory may be authorised to sell and let lands; and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid. [24th November 1938] Queen's University of BelfastAdditional grant for general purposes of Queen's University. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 1 1. There shall be paid out of moneys provided by Parliament to the governing body of the Queen's University of Belfast, for the general purposes of the said University, in respect of each financial year a sum of twenty thousand pounds, and the said sums shall be in addition to the sums payable out of moneys so provided to the said University under section one of the Queen's University of Belfast Act (Northern Ireland), 1928, and the enactments mentioned in that section. S.2 rep. by 1970 c.15 (NI) s.11 sch.3. Ss.3,4 rep. by 1953 c.i (NI) s.77 Grants for Armagh Observatory. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 5 5. There shall be paid out of moneys provided by Parliament to the governors of the Armagh Observatory, for the purposes of the Armagh Observatory and Museum Act, 1791, such sums as the [Department of Education] may from time to time determine to be necessary for the said purposes. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 6 Additional governors of the Observatory. 6. The following persons shall be members of the corporation created by section two of the Armagh Observatory and Museum Act, 1791, as governors of the Armagh Observatory, in addition to the persons who are governors thereof by virtue of their offices as provided by the said section, namely: one person appointed from time to time by the Governor of Northern Ireland; one person appointed from time to time by the governing body of the Queen's University of Belfast; Sale or lease of Observatory lands. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 7 7. The Governors of the Armagh Observatory may apply to the Ministry of Finance for its approval to the sale or lease of any part of the lands held by the said governors on the trusts declared in the Armagh Observatory and Museum Act, 1791; and if, on any such application and after making such inquiry as it thinks fit, the Ministry of Finance is satisfied that the proposed sale or lease would be to the advantage of the said trusts, or would be in the public interest and can be effected without affecting prejudically the interests of the said trusts, then the said Ministry may authorise the sale or lease, and may give such directions in relation thereto and for securing the due investment of any moneys arising therefrom for the benefit of the said trusts as it thinks fit. Interpretation. UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 8 8. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, the following expressions have the meanings hereby assigned to them, that is to say: "Armagh Observatory and Museum Act, 1791," means the Act passed by the Irish Parliament in the session held in the thirty-first year of the reign of His Majesty King George the Third, chapter forty-six, intituled, An Act for settling and preserving a Public Observatory and Museum in the City of Armagh for ever; "Governors of the Armagh Observatory" means governors and guardians of the observatory and museum to which the Armagh Observatory and Museum Act, 1791, applies; "Lease" includes the granting of land at a rent for a term of years or in perpetuity, and with or without the payment of a fine; Definitions rep. by 1953 c.i (NI) s.77 UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGIATE AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1938 - SECT 9 Short title. 9. This Act may be cited as the University and Collegiate and Scientific Institutions Act (Northern Ireland), 1938.
