The Adoption (Intercountry Aspects) Act (Northern Ireland) 2001 (Commencement No. 1 Order (Northern Ireland) 2001
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety[1], in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 16(2) of the Adoption (Intercountry Aspects) Act (Northern Ireland) 2001[2] and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
Citation and interpretation
1.
- (1) This Order may be cited as the Adoption (Intercountry Aspects) Act (Northern Ireland) 2001 (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 2001.
(2) In this Order -
"the Act" means the Adoption (Intercountry Aspects) Act (Northern Ireland) 2001.
Appointed day
2.
The 1st October 2001 is the day appointed for the coming into operation of the following sections of the Act:
(a) section 7 (Adoption Service to include intercountry adoptions etc); and
(b) section 11 (Construction of certain references).

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order brings into operation on 1st October 2001, sections 7 and 11 of the Adoption (Intercountry Aspects) Act (Northern Ireland) 2001.
Section 7 inserts into the Adoption (Northern Ireland) Order 1987 (the 1987 Order) a new paragraph which provides that references to adoption in Part II of that Order are to the adoption of children, wherever they may be habitually resident, whether effected within or outside the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Section 11 inserts into the 1987 Order a new paragraph which provides that making arrangements for adoption includes arrangements for an assessment for the purpose of indicating whether or not a person is suitable to adopt a child.
