The Education Reform Act 1988 (Commencement No. 7) Order 1989

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 236(6) to (8) of the Education Reform Act 1988(1) the Secretary of State for Education and Science hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and interpretation

1.-(1) This Order may be cited as the Education Reform Act 1988 (Commencement No. 7) Order 1989.

(2) In this Order-�

"the Act" means the Education Reform Act 1988.

Coming into force of certain provisions of the Act

2. The provisions of the Act specified in column 1 of the Schedule to this Order (which relate to the matters mentioned in column 2 thereof) shall, except as otherwise provided in the said column 1, come into force on 1st May 1989.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order brings into force on 1st May 1989 section 210 of the Act, which empowers the Secretary of State to make Regulations providing for the payment of grants to local education authorities in respect of the provision of education for travellers and displaced persons. It also brings into force on that date section 211, which extends section 11 of the Local Government Act 1966 (c. 42) (grants in respect of special provision for immigrants) by enabling the Secretary of State to pay such grants in respect of grant-maintained schools, city technology colleges and city colleges for the technology of the arts, and institutions within the PCFC funding sector.

Also brought into force on 1st May 1989 are various consequential repeals.
