Solicitors Act 1954 (Section 44) Order 2003

I, Michael McDowell, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (6) of section 44 (inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994 ( No. 27 of 1994 )) of No. 36 of 1954 ) (as adapted by the Justice (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 1997 ( S.I. No. 298 of 1997 )), and being satisfied that, on the day appointed by this order, reciprocal provisions will be in operation in the jurisdiction to which this order relates in respect of solicitors whose names are on the roll, hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Solicitors Act 1954 (Section 44) Order 2003.

2. The 1st day of October 2003 is appointed as the day on which section 44 (inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994 ( No. 27 of 1994 )) of No. 36 of 1954 ) shall come into operation in relation to the profession of attorney and counselor at law in the state of California of the United States of America.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation)

This order brings section 44 of the Solicitors Act, 1954 (inserted by section 52 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act, 1994 ) into operation in relation to the profession of attorney and counselor at law in the state of California of the United States of America. The effect of the order is that an attorney qualified in California may be admitted as a solicitor in Ireland subject to the corresponding conditions under which solicitors whose names are on the roll may be admitted to practice in that state.
